A Mile Away

The old port-city Constanta and the Black Sea

After we traveled half of Romania we were so happy to enjoy the sea and the sun. Constanta is a very old port city near the Black Sea.

⚓️🛳🚢⛴ Constanta was founded almost 2600 years ago. It is the oldest attested city in Romania, the biggest port at the Black Sea (third largest in Europe after Rotterdam and Marseille) and also the fourth largest city in Romania with its 400,000 inhabitants. Constanta was founded by the Greeks as a port on the Black Sea coast for trading with inland people and was first called Tomis (VIth c. BC). The city was renamed Constantiana by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in honor of his sister (274-337). It was still a flourishing port city in the 10th and 11th centuries, trading with the Byzantine Empire and the city of Genoa.

Romanian’s Black Sea coast makes a great summer vacation destination with miles of sand and beaches, stretching from Mangalia to Mamaia. You have many options of beaches, depending of the preferences. We chose this time Constanta beach and Mamaia beach. We chose those because we had booked 5 nights in Constanta city and those were more close to us. Most of the time we were in Constanta beaches, because Mamaia was very crowded. Constanta beach is the option if you are looking for privacy. This beach is long and spacious.

Constanta is a charming city on the shore of the Black Sea, located at a distance of approximately 220 km from Bucharest. In Constanta you can stroll on the sea front, enjoy a drink in the port, you could sun bathe or visit one of the numerous wonderful places hidden in this city.

The Casino in Constanta is, certainly, the symbol of the city, being over 130 years old. The headstone of the Casino was laid in 1880 and represented at the time the meeting place of the elites, sailor and tourists. The Casino held two game halls, one dance hall and two reading halls. But unfortunately, in 1891, the casino was destroyed by a very heavy storm, and the City Hall decided to build a new one that was inaugurated two years later, in 1893.
