A Mile Away

Danube Delta

We had the great opportunity to visit the Danube Delta in August 2019 and we were really impressed, words can’t describe the beautiful wildlife contained in the Danube Delta reserve.

The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta and is the best preserved on the continent. There live so many species of birds: herons, pelicans, eagles, falcons, ducks, swans, storks, egrets, kingfisher, bitterns, the white tailed eagle, wild ponies, the rarer racoon dog and many others species. There are over 320 species of birds found in the delta during summer, of which 166 are hatching species and 159 are migratory. Over one million individual birds (swans, wild ducks, coots etc.) winter here.

We had the chance to watch them in their natural habitats and the view was stunning. Danube Delta is a paradise for bird and animal lovers and it is also an Unesco Natural World Heritage site.

We did an 8 hours tour with a small boat from Tulcea city and we had a local guide who was very informative. In Tulcea you have several agencies at the port which offer different kind of tours. I recommend to chose a small and slow boat (that allow you to travel the smaller canals), so you can enjoy the beautiful atmosphere and make great photos. The nature there is awesome and breathtaking!

We had a stop for a lunch and we ate very good fresh water fish from the Delta. We paid 50 Ron extra for this lunch, but it was optional.

During the lunch we had a great time with others people and the host explained us how they prepare the fish and he told us their special receipt. The meal based on fishes, soup, fried fish and tuica (Romanian schnapps).

We are so happy that we had an incredible experience. Absolutely stunning!
